Beat That Fall Cold

Nobody likes that fall cold that somehow makes it way to many of us every single year.

Colds suck and even though you say, "oh, it is just a cold," that doesn't mean that it doesn't leave you feeling pretty terrible. I've had some pretty bad colds and colds that have turned into a more serious issue.

When the weather gets chilly, there is that time when it seems like everyone around you is sick, am I right? While there is no cure for the common cold, there are some things that you can do to help you feel better and even prevent catching it to begin with!

I am all for a good home remedy. Yes, there are many times when a doctor and medicine is needed, but a doctor won't do anything if you've got a cold. There have been quite a few times when I've been sick for two weeks and I go to a doctor thinking I have something more serious that needs medication just to be told I haven't been sick long enough for it to be serious. Colds suck, so here are my sure fire ways to get back up and feeling better in no time!

Staying hydrated is so important. You should be drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water every single day. So, if you weight 140 pounds, you should be drinking 70 ounces of water every day. Hydration is also key when you're sick. Drink lots of water (warm lemon water is great!) and some hot tea with lemon and local honey!

Take a break. Even if it is "just a cold," that doesn't mean that you don't need some extra rest. Go to bed earlier, take a power nap after class or work, and consider staying in while you're not feeling great.

Add some moisture to the air. I always get really congested when I've got a cold and I've found that a humidifier helps with that. If you don't have one, breathe in that steam from the hot water when you shower. It'll break up all that congestion.

Vitamin C is your friend. Taking vitamin C as soon as I feel the symptoms coming on really seems to  help and shorten the duration of my cold.

Keep your hands washed. Just do it. Wash your hands and keep hand sanitizer on you for those times when you're in a crunch.
