This is the best make ahead and freeze for later marinara sauce
Cooking is one of my favorite things. Being in the kitchen, making a really good meal from scratch (or even with just a few shortcuts), while listening to Taylor Swift or one of my favorite podcasts fills my soul with so much happiness.
Some of my favorite recipes call for marinara sauce and sure, you can get a decent jar of marinara sauce at the store. But this homemade marinara sauce is delicious and you can take a day to make it, let it cool, freeze it in batches, and then pull it out when you need it.
Don't worry, I'm not going to ramble on too long. You're here for the recipe, so here you go!
Ingredients:
- 1/3 c olive oil
- 1 diced onion
- 5 tsp minced garlic
- salt and pepper
- 1 tbsp oregano
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 c chopped basil
- 1/2 tsp chopped fennel seeds
- 1/3 c red wine
- 2 14 oz cans diced tomatoes
- 3 28 oz crushed tomatoes
- 1 c beef broth
Directions:
- Saute onion in olive oil. Add garlic and seasonings and cook 3 more minutes.
- Add the wine and cook until it’s reduced by half.
- Add diced tomatoes and cook until it’s reduced, about 5-10 minutes.
- Add in the crushed tomatoes and broth.
- Simmer for at least 4 hours.
- Use immediately or freeze in freezer bags to use later! I freeze this sauce is 1 and 3 cup portions.
Happy cooking!
xx,
Amanda
